Rhodes is the fourth biggest island (1.410 km2) of Greece and the biggest among a complex of islands called Dodecanese. The island counts 130.007 inhabitants and the capital - the city of Rhodes - 53.709. The capital of Rhodes lies outside and within the walls of a well preserved Venetian castle, built by the Knights of Saint John, and is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture. Within the walls of the castle lies the old town of Rhodes, the world's best characterised well preserved old traditional inhabited town. The beauty of its capital, its interesting sites and its many Byzantine churches make this Greek island one of the most popular islands of Greece. |
